Nichols leads Bugs in Win over Wolves

The Shreveport Mudbugs (16-8) get a pair of goals from Carson Nichols to lead the way in a 3-1 victory over the New Mexico Ice Wolves Friday night at George’s Pond in Hirsch Coliseum.
The Bugs opened up the scoring as Dawson Sciarrino held the zone and got the puck infront of the net and Alexis Girard backhanded home his fourth goal of the year! The goal came at 16:31 of the 1st period to give Shreveport the early 1-0 edge. Bugs led in SOG, 10-4 after one period of play.
New Mexico took advantage on the powerplay in the 2nd period as Philip Ekberg one-timed a goal from the short side to even the score, 1-1 at 11:33. The Bugs responded though shorthanded when Carson Nichols raced on a breakaway and made a nifty move on the backhand to tally in his second goal of the season at 14:58 making it a 2-1 lead for Bugs hockey. Aidan Metcalfe made the pass up ahead to Nichols and grabbed the only assist. Shreveport led in SOG, 22-13 after two.
The Bugs stayed hot early in the 3rd period as Carson Nichols skated in front and hammered home his second goal of the game at 4:38 to make it a 3-1 contest. Alexis Girard and Warren Natyshak earned the assists.
Maiszon Balboa earned the win in net making just 18 saves on the night.
Shreveport goes to 5-0 at George’s Pond in Hirsch Coliseum this season.

The Bugs will conclude their two-game series against New Mexico tomorrow night at George’s Pond in Hirsch Coliseum. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:11 p.m.
