The Shreveport Mudbugs (18-15-6) double up the Lone Star Brahmas, 6-3 and win a big game on MLK Day at the Nytex Sports Centre.
Shreveport got off a roaring start in the 1st period out-shooting Lone Star, 13-3. The Bugs got rewarded with a lucky goal as C.J. Regula was able to redirect a puck at 16:54 to give the Mudbugs a 1-0 lead. Conor Witherspoon and Anton Rubstov grabbed the assists on the only tally of the opening period.
The Mudbugs built off their first period momentum and used it to score another big goal. Timmy Clifton ripped one in from the right wing for his fourth goal of the season and 3rd in as many games at 6:13. Warren Natyshak and Conor Witherspoon grabbed the helpers on Clifton’s goal. Lone Star came right back with goals from Eric Huss and a late tally from former Bug Thomas Daskas to even the score, 2-2 after two periods of play. Shreveport led in SOG, 25-9.
The Mudbugs broke a 2-2 tie when Clifton ripped home his 2nd goal of the circle to give Shreveport a 3-2 lead at 3:09 of the 3rd period. Anton Rubstov then capitalized on a breakway and shot in his sixth goal of the year unassisted to give the Bugs a 4-2 edge at 7:45 of the 3rd. In the last minutes of the game, Ryan Dickinson would lob in an EN and SH goal at 17:59 to give Shreveport a 5-2 spread. Lone Star would right back 12 seconds later with a goal, but Feiwell put the icing on the cake at 19:24 tapping in his 10th goal of the year which was another empty-netter for the Bugs making it a 6-3 contest.
Mudbugs win their second straight at Nytex Sports Centre after dropping their last seven in the Brahmas’ barn.
Maiszon Balboa picked up his sixth win of the year in net making just 10 saves on the afternoon.
The Mudbugs will return home to Georges Pond in Hirsch Coliseum to take on the Topeka Pilots for a two-game set starting this Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:11 p.m. for Friday and Saturday and it’s Military Appreciation weekend. Bugs players will be wearing special Military-themed jerseys all weekend which will auctioned off after Saturday night’s contest.
