Mudbugs Storm the Roadrunners

The Shreveport Mudbugs (37-9-3-2) stormed past the Topeka Roadrunners, 6-2 winning their 16th home in their last 17 tries Friday night at Georges Pond in Hirsch Coliseum.

Shreveport opened up the scoring when Jonatan Asplund kept the puck into the offensive zone and flipped the puck up ahead for Jake Transit to drive in for his 11th goal of the year at 3:04 of the 1st. The Mudbugs led 1-0 after the opening period.

Topeka scored on the PP at 2:17 of the 2nd period before Brendan VanSweden raced down the ice and slammed in his 9th goal just 17 seconds later to give the Bugs lead back at 2-1. Derek Contessa and Roberts Baranovskis grabbed the assists on the goal. Jordan Fader then used his blazing speed to go coast to coast and slip in his 13th goal of the year at 13:06. Ryan Burnett picked up the only assist as Shreveport led 3-1. The Mudbugs closed out the 2nd period when Cole Quisenberry wired home his 15th goal of the year from the slot at 16:14 giving Shreveport a commanding 4-1 edge. Fader and Burnett recorded the assists on the goal.

Shreveport added to their goal scoring barrage as Jack Clement wristed home his 11th goal of the year on the PP at 16:15 of the 3rd making it a 5-1 Bugs lead. Ryan Burnett picked up his third assist on the night on Clement’s tally. Transit then blasted in his second goal of the night off the initial faceoff win from the far circle making it a 6-1 advantage for the South Divisional leaders. Brendan Gysbers and Jacob Holmers grabbed the assists on Transit’s goal. Shreveport would give up a late tally, but closed out the game with a 6-2 victory.

The Mudbugs and Topeka will conclude their two-game set tomorrow night at Georges Pond in Hirsch Coliseum. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:11pm. Military jerseys will be auctioned off after the game. ​
