Mudbugs Shutout and Sweep Warriors

Mar 29, 2021

The Shreveport Mudbugs (27-7-5) rout the Wichita Falls Warriors, 6-0 Saturday night at Kay Yeager Coliseum.
Shreveport got off to a good start at 8:45 of the opening period when Joe Mack one-timed in his 11th tally of the season from the LW circle to give the Bugs an early 1-0 lead. Braiden Dorfman earned the only assist with the nice cross-ice pass on the PP. Mack wouldn’t stop there as he’d strike again at 10:45 and slap in his second goal of the game from the slot to give Shreveport a quick 2-0 edge. Connor Gatto did the hard down low and picked up the only assist. The Bugs extended their lead at 13:29 when Dawson Sciarrino intercepted a cross-ice pass and went in on an odd-man rush and dropped a perfect pass far-side for Matt Weber to tap in for his 12th goal of the year and make it a 3-0 Shreveport advantage. The Bugs would put the icing on the cake of the opening frame when Gio Procopio threw one toward the net from the near corner which bounced off the skate of the Warriors’ goalie and into the net to make it a 4-0 spread for Shreveport. Dorfman earned his second assist of the game and Adam Kolcon grabbed the secondary helper on Procopio’s goal at 19:53.
Surprisingly, Shreveport scored four times on just seven shots in the 1st period as they led in SOG, 7-6.
There was no scoring in the 2nd period, but it was filled with many crazy incidents which had a big brawl break out between both teams. The Bugs ended up losing half of their bench due to 10-min misconduct penalties all over the place. To the Bugs credit though, they were able to keep the Warriors off the board with a great penalty kill effort with the players they had left. Wichita led in SOG in the period, 17-11.
More fights broke out in the third period including a fist fight with Captain David Breazeale and Drake Usher. Other than that, Connor Gatto and Billy Feczko scored goals at 6:37 and 10:32 to extend the Shreveport lead to 6-0.
Cole Hudson stopped all 24 shots he faced to earn his second shutout of the season and 16th win in net.
The Bugs will take on the Amarillo Bulls for a two-game series beginning next Friday night at the Amarillo Civic Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
