Bugs Sweep Brahmas to take over 1st Place in South Division

Jan 23, 2021

The Shreveport Mudbugs (17-3-3) sweep the Lone Star Brahmas at the Nytex Sports Centre winning 4-1 Saturday night to take over first place in the South Division.
Despite a nightmarish 1st period for Shreveport getting out-shot 14-5 by Lone Star, they were able to cash in on the game’s first goal. Braiden Dorfman took a brilliant feed from Dawson Sciarrino through the slot and tucked in his ninth goal of the season from the short side to make it a 1-0 Bugs edge. Mason McCormick made the goal all possible by stealing the puck in the offensive zone and earned the secondary helper.
Shreveport regrouped in the 2nd period and it was Chris Hedden knuckling in his fourth goal of the season with an innocent wrist shot from the slot at 6:25 to give the Bugs a 2-0 advantage. Hedden’s goal was assisted by Connor Gatto. The Bugs would extend their lead at 14:32 when Joe Mack tapped in his fourth goal of the season from the far side assisted by Matt Weber and Trenton Heyde to make it a 3-0 contest. Bugs led in SOG in the period, 10-8.
Lone Star got on the board at 9:02 when Joey Baez banged in his ninth tally of the season to make it a 3-1 contest. The Bugs held off any surge from the Brahmas by adding an empty-net tally from Gio Procopio at 18:45 to put the icing on the cake for a 4-1 victory.
With the win, Shreveport takes over first place in the South Division because they’ve played less games than Lone Star.

The Bugs will return home to George’s Pond in Hirsch Coliseum next Friday and Saturday to host these very same Lone Star Brahmas in this back-to-back home and home series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:11 p.m. Friday night.
