The Shreveport Mudbugs (28-11-2) got goals from Hayden Nichol and Ryan Burke in the shootout to help outlast the New Mexico Ice Wolves, 3-2 to earn the sweep at Outpost Ice Arenas Saturday night.
NM got on the board very quickly into the game as Bryce Johnson took a fortunate bounce and shot in his seventh goal of the season from the LW circle to give the Ice Wolves a 1-0 lead at 1:32. SHV responded quite quickly though as at 2:41 on the PP it was Kyan Haldenby ramming in a rebound in front for his team-leading 17th tally of the year to even the score, 1-1. Colin Vassallo set up the play and threw the initial shot on net earning the only assist on the play. The Bugs led in SOG, 13-10 after one.
Shreveport would cash in on their next man-advantage as Ryan Burke fed Hayden Nichol in the LW circle who one-timed his 15th goal of the campaign to give the Bugs a 2-1 lead at 13:55. SHV led in SOG, 21-14.
NM put a furious surge late in the third and with their netminder pulled for the extra attacker, it was Ryan Johnson who jolted in his 24th goal of the year from the high slot to tie the game, 2-2 at 19:38.
The game stayed tied through OT sending the contest into a shootout. Hayden Nichol and Ryan Burke would both score and Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau would stop the two shots he faced to clinch a dramatic Mudbugs 3-2 victory over the Ice Wolves.
Seguin-Lescarbeau made 24 saves to earn his 18th win in the cage and help SHV win their fifth straight game.
The Bugs will be on the road again as they’ll begin a three-game series this Thursday night against the Corpus Christi IceRays. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from the American Bank Center.
