Bugs Claw Out Sweep Over Ice Wolves

Mar 20, 2022

The Shreveport Mudbugs (28-18-5) fought and clawed out a hard earned, low scoring victory over the New Mexico Ice Wolves, 2-1 to earn the sweep at Outpost Ice Arenas Saturday night.
Shreveport opened up the scoring early in the 1st period at 3:34 when Garrett Steele got a rebound in front and popped in his 10th tally of the year to give the Bugs a 1-0 advantage. Jacob Onstott and Carter Green did the work down and pressured the net to earn the helpers on the game’s first goal. Devon Bobak got peppered a bit after that as NM led in SOG, 12-6 after one.
The Bugs added to their lead late in the 2nd period at 17:43 when NM turned over the puck and Timofei Khokhlachev went the other way all alone and faked out Beni Halasz and fore-handed in his 12th goal of the season to extend the Shreveport lead to 2-0. The Ice Wolves would respond 50 seconds later and get on the board at 18:33 when Sully Scholle redirected home his third tally of the campaign to make it a 2-1 contest. NM threw the kitchen sink at Devon Bobak, but he stood tall for the most part as the Bugs were out-shot 30-14 after two.
The Bugs held off a furious surge from the Ice Wolves in the third period and edged out a 2-1 victory and their ninth win in their last ten contests.
Devon Bobak was brilliant yet again between the pipes making 38 stops in net to earn his eighth straight personal win.

The Bugs will continue this road trip over to Wichita Falls, TX on Wednesday to play a make-up game against the Warriors. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Kay Yeager Coliseum.
