Bugs Beat the Pilots

Dec 9, 2018

The Shreveport Mudbugs (12-11-4) showed plenty of resilience and nudged past the Topeka Pilots, 3-2 in the shootout Sunday evening at the Kansas Expocentre.

The Pilots got on the board first midway through the 1st when Valdemar Ahlberg shot in his sixth goal of the year giving Topeka a 1-0 lead. Mudbugs out-shot the Pilots, 13-9 after one period of play despite trailing 1-0.

Shreveport got on an outburst in the 2nd period and it started on the powerplay at 2:37 when C.J. McGee put a ripper in from the point that found its way through traffic for his sixth goal to tie the game up at 1. Gueorgui Feduolov earned the assist on the goal. The Bugs wouldn’t stop there on the PP as they capitalized on their next man-advantage opportunity. Captain Jay Feiwell put a quick wrister from the left wing for his seventh goal of the year to give Shreveport a 2-1 lead. Ethan Harrison earned the only helper on the goal. The Bugs out-shot the Pilots, 23-18 through two periods of play.
Topeka tied the game up with 5:28 left in the 3rd period sending the contest into overtime for a second straight game.
Leo Chuard made some big saves in desperation in OT to keep the game tied and send the game into a shootout session.
Jay Feiwell would score the only goal in the shootout session while Chuard stopped all three of his shots faced lifting Shreveport to a resilient 3-2 victory snapping a four-game losing streak.
The Mudbugs will now return home to Georges Pond in Hirsch Coliseum for a three-game set against the Lone Star Brahmas. The series begins Friday night with puck drop scheduled for 7:11 p.m.
