Shreveport goaltender John Roberts celebrated his 18th birthday in style, stopping 37 shots, and forward Steven Mather popped in two goals in less than 15 seconds early in the first period to key the Mudbugs to a 4-2 victory over the Amarillo Bulls Friday night at George’s Pond at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum.

“It’s definitely something to help me remember my 18th birthday by,” said Roberts, who gave up only a pair of second-period goals en route to improving his record to 6-4-0-1. “We had a good workout before the game, and I guess that helped us to get that good start, but the guys kept the lanes clear in front of me all game.”

The Mudbugs (14-7-0-1) went up 2-0 before most of the raucous crowd had gotten settled into their seats. Mather shoved the puck past Bulls goalie Nikita Babintsev on an assist from Tomas Zeile just 2:37 into the game, setting off a celebration that was still going 12 seconds later when he lit the lamp again. Brendan Van Sweden and Croix Evingson assisted on Mather’s second goal.
