Bugs Win Streak Snapped in Shootout Loss at NM

Apr 17, 2021

The Shreveport Mudbugs (31-7-6) couldn’t hold multiple one-goal leads and fell to the New Mexico Ice Wolves, 4-3 in the shootout ending their long win streak Friday night at Outpost Ice Arenas.
The Bugs got off to a fast start as Sean Bunting rifled home his ninth goal of the year from the slot to give Shreveport the early 1-0 lead at 3:18 of the opening period. The lead wouldn’t last long as New Mexico came back with tallies at 3:50 and 14:26 from Joey Larson and Jeff Hutchinson respectively to give the Wolves a 2-1 edge. It quickly became a sluggish 1st period as NM outshot SHV, 11-9 after one.
Shreveport got off to another fast start in the 2nd period as Joe Mack snapped in his 16th goal of the season on the PP from the LW circle off a brilliant pass from Braiden Dorfman to even the score, 2-2 just 36 seconds in. Dorfman and Adam Kolcon earned the assists on Mack’s 16th tally of the season. It was the only goal of the middle period as Shreveport led in SOG, 22-17 after two.
The Bugs regained the lead early in the 3rd period when Mason McCormick squeezed in his seventh goal of the season in front off another pass in front from Dorfman to give Shreveport a 3-2 lead. New Mexico would respond yet again as Jack Bayless scored on the PP from the near corner to even the score, 3-3.
The game stayed tied 3-3 going into OT and after amazing stops from Cole Hudson, the contest went to a shootout.
In the sixth round of the shootout, it was Joe Prouty slipping in the GW goal to snap the Bugs’ win streak at eight games.

The Bugs and Ice Wolves will continue their three-game series tomorrow night from Outpost Ice Arenas in Albuquerque, NM. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.
