Bugs Defeat Jackalopes

Oct 7, 2017

The Shreveport Mudbugs (7-2) used a couple of nice goals from Brendan VanSweden and superb goaltending to lead the way in a 4-1 victory over the Odessa Jackalopes Friday night at Ector County Coliseum.

The Mudbugs got on the board first in the first period when Jake Transit banged home a rebound in front for his first goal of the year at 5:37! Andrew Lane and Zach Faremouth got the assists on Transit’s goal.

Bugs led the Jacks, 1-0 after 1.

Shreveport added to their lead late in the 2nd period when Brendan Vansweden skated up the ice and wristed home a beauty for his 2nd goal of the year which gave the Bugs, a 2-0 edge. Captain Dominick Procopio got the only assist on the goal at the 15:00 mark of the period.

The Mudbugs saw their 2-0 lead cut in half when Odessa scored early in the 3rd period. The Bugs responded nicely as VanSweden was in the right place at the right time as Procopio fired a puck off his knee and into the back of the net. It was VanSweden’s 2nd goal of the night and put the Bugs up 3-1. Derek Contessa then followed as he scored on a breakaway putting the icing on the cake for Shreveport making it a 4-1 contest midway through the 3rd.

James Durham finished with 22 saves to improve his personal record to 3-0.

The Bugs have now won seven of their past eight games overall.

The Mudbugs and the Jackalopes will conclude their two-game set tomorrow night from Odessa with the puck drop scheduled for 7:11pm.
